What is Fire Safety Management?

This is a structured approach, generally based on

a fire safety policy to ensure your duties under the

Fire Safety Order are effectively complied with.

The policy will set out your objectives and allow you to develop fire safety procedures to ensure the correct actions are taken to maintain the physical aspects of the premises and also to provide information to staff and other persons visiting or using the premises.

Why?

The Fire Safety Order 2005 requires the ‘responsible person’ to ensure that any equipment and devices at the premises fire safety systems are subject to a suitable system of maintenance to ensure they are in efficient working order.

Other issues that fall within the responsibilities of Fire Safety Management and are required by the Fire Safety Order are;

  1. BulletFire risk assessment

  2. BulletEmergency procedure

  3. BulletFire safety information and training for staff

What does Fire Safety Management entail?

  1. BulletDesignating responsibility for fire safety in the building.

  2. BulletAccess to suitable advice on the requirements of fire safety legislation.

  3. BulletProcedures for people to follow in the event of a fire, including people with special responsibilities (the emergency procedure).

  4. BulletImplementing fire safety policies and procedures.

  5. BulletNomination of people to respond to a fire and, where appropriate, to assist with evacuation (fire wardens).

  6. BulletArrangement for liaison with the fire and rescue service, both in respect of pre-planning for fire and at the time of any fire.

  7. BulletArrangement for routine inspections of the building and its fire precautions or for more formal fire audits.

  8. BulletFire safety training and fire evacuation exercises.

  9. BulletTesting and maintenance of fire protection systems and equipment
